Amazon FBA Storage Fees: 2026 Rates and How to Calculate

How the fee is calculated

Amazon's monthly storage fee is based on the daily average volume your inventory occupies, measured in cubic feet at its packaged, ready-to-ship size. The formula is:

Fee = daily average units × unit volume (cubic feet) × applicable rate

Amazon's own worked example: 100 units/day × 0.05 cubic feet/unit × $0.78 = $3.90 for a product that hasn't triggered the utilization surcharge. If that same inventory's turnover falls into the 22-28 week surcharge tier, the rate adds $0.22, bringing the total to $4.12.

Dangerous goods are billed on a separate, higher rate table: $0.99 / cu ft (standard) and $0.78 / cu ft (oversize) non-peak, rising to $3.63 and $2.43 in peak season.

Storage utilization surcharge

On top of the base rate, Amazon adds a storage utilization surcharge once inventory sits too long relative to how fast it sells. For standard-size items in non-peak season, the added rate stacks like this:

Oversize items in peak season can reach a combined rate as high as $4.28 / cubic foot at the highest tier.

Who is exempt from the surcharge

The surcharge only applies if all four of these are true:

You're on a Professional selling plan.
Your first shipment to a US Amazon warehouse was more than 365 days ago.
Your daily average volume in that size tier is at least 25 cubic feet.
Your storage utilization ratio for that tier is over 22 weeks.

New sellers (first shipment under 365 days old), Individual-plan sellers, and sellers whose average volume is 25 cubic feet or less pay the base rate only — no surcharge.

Two other carve-outs are worth knowing: if 70% or more of a product's FBA inventory over the trailing 13 weeks was replenished automatically through Amazon Warehousing and Distribution (AWD), the surcharge is waived (check your status in the FBA Surcharge Waiver Status report). And inventory enrolled in the FBA New Selection program — free monthly storage, free liquidation, and free returns processing for eligible new products — doesn't count toward either the base fee or the surcharge while enrolled.

Billing schedule

Monthly storage fee bills are typically issued between the 7th and 15th of the following month.

Amazon's own guidance points to three levers: raise your sell-through rate so inventory turns over faster, submit a liquidation order for slow-moving stock, or submit a removal order to pull inventory out before it accumulates a surcharge.
